Choosing the initial in Gurmukhi
The Sikh Rehat Maryada describes taking a Hukam from the Guru Granth Sahib and proposing a name beginning with the hymn’s first letter. Families can compare that Gurmukhi initial with a name’s attested written form, since Roman spellings do not always preserve the same sounds.
SGPC, Sikh Rehat Maryada, Article XVII: birth and naming · Sikh Missionary Society: Nam Karan.
Singh and Kaur
Article XVII prescribes Singh after a boy’s given name and Kaur after a girl’s. These are conventional additions in the Sikh tradition, separate from the given name. Many Punjabi given names can be used for both boys and girls. A name on this site is never a classification of a bearer’s faith.
Understanding components
Punjabi names often combine meaningful elements. Gurpreet brings together gur, “guru, teacher”, and preet, “love, attachment”. Mandeep combines man, “mind, heart”, and deep, “lamp, light”. The individual profiles cite each component rather than assigning an unsupported English phrase to the whole name.
Simran
Wiktionary records simran as remembrance and repetition, with a Sikhism sense of devotional remembrance. It also records Simran as a unisex given name.
