Word history

Monier-Williams (1899) records bhāradvāja with the sense “relating to bharadvaja”. Bhāradvāja is a derivative of the older name Bharadvāja. The dictionary distinguishes a relational adjective from a patronymic noun. The initial long vowel is part of that derivation; the two similar Sanskrit spellings are therefore not interchangeable. The surname form भारद्वाज preserves the derived word, without establishing an individual genealogy. The vowel length is part of the distinction.
