Word history
Monier-Williams (1899) records bhaṭṭa with the sense “venerable scholar”. Bhaṭṭa has both a respectful title sense and the adjective sense venerable. The title can stand before or after a personal name in the dictionary examples. भट्ट writes a doubled retroflex consonant, represented by the final tt in Bhatt; the Latin spelling usually leaves off the final Sanskrit vowel. The title and adjective remain distinct senses.
