Word history
Monier-Williams (1899) records datta with the sense “given, bestowed”. Datta is a participial form from the Sanskrit verb dā, to give. Monier-Williams lists given, granted and presented as its senses. दत्त and দত্ত preserve the doubled dental consonant. Datt leaves off the final vowel in Latin spelling; the word’s grammatical history does not identify a particular gift or recipient. The final tt records a doubled consonant.
