Word history

Monier-Williams (1899) records yogin with the sense “practitioner of yoga”. Yogin is the Sanskrit word behind the vernacular form Jogi. The dictionary gives a practitioner sense, while the written forms जोगी and જોગી reflect the regional initial consonant. The meaning is part of the older word for practice. A surname spelling alone does not demonstrate anyone’s training or personal practice. The two forms keep different initial consonants.
