Word history

Monier-Williams (1899) records māṇikya with the sense “ruby”. Māṇikya is the Sanskrit jewel word cited for the Gujarati form Manek. Monier-Williams gives the specific sense ruby, rather than treating every precious stone as identical. The forms માણેક and माणेक record the regional word. The English gloss is a translation of that jewel term, not a statement about material possessions. The two written forms retain the long second vowel.
