Word history

Monier-Williams (1899) records nāgara with the sense “of a town, urban”. Nāgara is formed from nagara, a town or city. The dictionary gives the adjective a civic or town-related sense. The long first vowel distinguishes nāgara from its base noun in Sanskrit transliteration. नागर and નાગર record the adjective form; the word alone does not identify any particular town. The adjective and its base retain different vowels.
