Word history

Monier-Williams (1899) records śārdūla with the sense “tiger”. Śārdūla is a Sanskrit animal word meaning tiger. It also occurs in literary compounds, where the image of the animal can support a comparison. शार्दूल retains the long vowels recorded in the dictionary transliteration. The surname’s literal animal sense is lexical evidence; it does not attribute strength or temperament to anyone. The final short Sanskrit vowel is omitted.
