Word history
Monier-Williams (1899) records śāstrin with the sense “learned teacher”. Śāstrin describes learning in śāstra, a treatise or body of instruction. The dictionary also records a teacher of books or science. शास्त्री and શાસ્ત્રી retain the later title form. The lexical explanation concerns the educational title itself, and does not certify a degree, field of study or qualification for an individual.
