Word history

Monier-Williams (1899) records ṭhakkura with the sense “lord, chief”. The older title ṭhakkura is the cited etymon for Thakkar. The dictionary includes rank and authority among its senses and explicitly connects the title with later naming forms. The Gujarati form ઠક્કર preserves a doubled consonant; it is not an English translation of the title. The older title has a final short vowel. Its later Gujarati form has a different ending.
