Word history
Monier-Williams (1899) records upādhyāya with the sense “teacher, preceptor”. Upādhyāya is a teaching title. Monier-Williams describes instruction in a subject or a portion of a text and distinguishes the term from other educational titles. The surname उपाध्याय retains that title as a word. The shorter Latin ending ay represents the vernacular pronunciation rather than adding a new lexical component. The Sanskrit title has a final short vowel.
