Word history
Monier-Williams (1899) records upādhyāya with the sense “teacher, preceptor”. The Marathi surname Upadhye continues the teaching title upādhyāya. The dictionary explains the older word as an instructor or preceptor, with examples concerned with teaching a subject or part of a text. उपाध्ये has a different final vowel from उपाध्याय; the e ending is part of the surname form. The two surname forms retain distinct final vowels.
